In the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, analytics and advertising storage are denied so visit measurement runs without cookies; outside those regions, Google Analytics 4 may use analytics cookies such as _ga and _ga_*, and there is no advertising. This page explains what is kept locally and what is transmitted. To limit Google Analytics measurement, you can block or delete _ga cookies in your browser settings or use the Google opt-out add-on: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. Deleting cookies alone does not prevent them from being set again. This site has no on-page analytics opt-out control.

What cookies are

Cookies are small text files that a website places on your device (computer, smartphone or tablet) when you visit. They serve to remember your settings, to analyse how the site is used, or to improve your experience. Besides cookies, a website may use other browser storage techniques — such as local storage (localStorage) — which serve a similar purpose but are technically not cookies. Cookies cannot access other data on your device and, on their own, contain no information that directly identifies you.

The current state

On an ordinary visit this website sets no advertising cookies anywhere, and no analytics cookies in the EEA, the United Kingdom or Switzerland. Visits are measured with Google Analytics 4, with storage granted globally and analytics, advertising and personalisation storage denied for the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland: with no consent banner on this site to grant storage in those protected regions, Google may receive cookieless measurements there, while outside those regions analytics cookies such as _ga and _ga_* may be used. Opening a page does make one request to a Google server to load that tag. From this site’s own code, there is one optional flag that can be written to your device, described below rather than passed over in silence. No advertising network is integrated.

In short: on an ordinary visit this site’s own code sets no cookie, and no advertising is active. Google Analytics 4 loads with storage granted globally and analytics, advertising and personalisation storage denied in the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland; with no consent banner on this site, Google may receive cookieless measurements in those regions, while analytics cookies such as _ga and _ga_* may be used outside them. The one cookie this site’s own code can write is the gr_int internal-visit flag, described below, and it is written only if you ask for it. If the set of services changes — for example once advertising is added — this page will name each cookie and explain how consent is given, managed or withdrawn, the same way for every visitor, regardless of where they are.

Technically necessary storage

So that the site can respect a choice you make, a small amount of information may be stored in your browser’s local storage. It is technically necessary, serves only to make the site work, and is stored regardless of any consent. This is local storage (localStorage), and so technically not a cookie:

Your language-suggestion choice — when the site notices your browser prefers the other available language and you dismiss that suggestion, this remembers your choice so the suggestion does not reappear on every page.
The gr_int flag — but only if you deliberately open a page with ?internal=1 appended. On an ordinary visit this flag is not written. What it is and what it does is set out below, under “Excluding our own visits”.

This entry remains until you clear your browser’s storage. It contains no name, no email address and no identifier that could be used to build a user profile.

Google Analytics 4 — measurement without cookies

Visits are measured with Google Analytics 4. Under Google Consent Mode v2, storage is configured by region: storage is granted globally and analytics, advertising and personalisation storage are denied for the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. Because this site carries no consent management platform (CMP) to grant storage in those protected regions, Google may receive cookieless measurements there, while outside those regions analytics cookies such as _ga and _ga_* may be used. Each measurement message carries the page address, where the visit came from, the IP address (from which Google derives an approximate location) and general device and browser characteristics. That data may be processed outside the Netherlands.

In the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland no analytics cookies are set; outside those regions Google Analytics 4 may use analytics cookies such as _ga and _ga_*. If advertising is ever added, a full overview will be published here first — with the name, provider, purpose and storage duration of each individual cookie.

Excluding our own visits

From this site’s own code, one optional flag is named here rather than passed over in silence: on every page view the measurement code checks whether the gr_int flag is present in your browser. That is our own exclusion for internal visits, so that our test traffic does not end up in the figures. It is written only when a page is opened with ?internal=1 appended — as a cookie with a lifetime of one year, and additionally in local storage. Without that, this flag is not written, and nothing on this site links to it. It holds a single flag and nothing about you: no name, no email address and no identifier that could be used to build a user profile. You delete it by clearing this site’s data in your browser.

Third-party cookies

Analytics cookies (outside the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland) and any future advertising cookies are provided by Google LLC (USA) via the Google Analytics 4 and Google AdSense services. Google LLC is certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, through which the European Commission has found an adequate level of data protection for certified companies. Google Analytics 4 truncates IP addresses; the advertising network may, as a third party, process further data for advertising purposes (including the IP address and device identifiers). How Google uses data and how you set or switch off personalised advertising can be found at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites and adssettings.google.com. No advertising cookies are set on this site today, and in the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland analytics storage is denied.

Managing and withdrawing your consent

There is no consent message (CMP) on this site to grant or change storage in the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland (where analytics, advertising and personalisation storage are denied), and no advertising is active. The button below stands ready for the moment advertising does run:

The website sets no advertising cookies, and in the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland analytics storage is denied (outside those regions, Google Analytics 4 may use analytics cookies such as _ga and _ga_*).
